“Really?” Charlie asked. “You did?” Rex must have left Iowa City the same day Charlie left Iowa City. Charlie, after all, had been in Chicago less than a week. Was his lack of sleep screwing with his sense of time? The math wasn’t adding up. “Huh!” Charlie added. “Hey, listen. Someone down here’s supposed to show me the ropes. Do you know who?”

“That would be me,” Rex said.

“You? But you just started working here.”

“I know,” Rex said. “But I’m the only one down here. And you gotta trust me on this, pal. There’s not a hell of a lot to show you. If you know how to sit on your ass, you pretty much have the job mastered.” Rex smiled, slapped Charlie’s shoulder. “Jesus Christ, it’s good to see you. Listen. We should get a drink tonight. What do you say?”

“I don’t get off until, what, eight in the morning?” Charlie said. “I don’t think any place will be open.”

“Oh yeah; shit; that’s right,” Rex said. “I’m on frickin’ moon time. What about this weekend?”

Charlie wasn’t sure he wanted to socialize with the old Iowa contingent. For starters, it was Rex who’d informed Charlie that Petra had moved to Chicago. It would seem pathetic to admit after a few drinks that he was trying to track her down, especially when his real motive for moving here was to help Jainey O’Sullivan. But how could he explain any of this to Rex? And now that he thought about it, was Jainey O’Sullivan his real reason for coming here? What had he done to help the girl—to really help her? Nothing.

“Sure,” Charlie said. “Okay. Tomorrow.”

“It’s a deal then,” Rex said.
